GFT: Geek Family Therapy

Geek Family Therapy Podcast

Catching Up, Character Alignments, Narrative Therapy

November 12, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#13: We’ve been gone for a whole month, we are totally sorry.  Yes, it’s Kat’s fault, due to overwhelming work schedules and crisis, as well as getting very sick and then injured, October was just not a good month. But here it is lucky number 13.

Lea and Kat discuss the neutral characters from Marvel and DC.  Kat explains how a character’s alignment help her clients in discussing some of their past traumas utilizing  a  modality of narrative therapy in which she will have her clients externalize their problems from themselves by creating comic versions of themselves and personifying their issues in their comics to help them identify the true problem and its effects on their life.

Of course, Lea and Kat did take an alignment test which confirmed what everyone already knows; Kat is easy.

go check it out yourself and take the test.

NY Comic Con

October 14, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#12: Lea, Kat & Shannon ( the man behind the curtain of GFT) went to New York Comic Con.  On Thursday and Friday the floor was busy but not so busy that it was hard to walk, but on Saturday and Sunday, the press of bodies was insane, making it nearly impossible to walk.  Lea discusses some of the craziness that is cosplaying during a con.  Kat discusses con plague prevention with the use of respirators like the one she got from http://www.un-re.com/   All the things on the page are handmade.

Kat and Leah got to interview Jason Porath the author and creator of Reject Princesses.  http://www.rejectedprincesses.com/

Kat attempted to get the book on Friday from Jason at artist Alley and he had already sold out on Thursday night.  By Friday night Harper-Collins had sold out of the book as well.  Jason was very nice and offered to answer some questions for the podcast.  The interview was during Sunday…. A notoriously busy day at NYCC due to the fact that it is still considered family day at the con.  This is the day that people will normally bring their children so the amount of people is insane.

If you haven’t heard of Rejected Princesses, check out the sight.  Or https://www.facebook.com/rejectedprincesses/ or search Tumblr for Rejected Princesses.  You can buy  the book from Amazon or Barnes & Noble as well it’s hard cover, it’s 384 pages, it’s not recommended for children, and the books go by rating, so the more graphic, the further in the back the story would be.

Character Alignments pt 1

October 2, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#11: This is the episode before NYCC.  Both Leah and Kat have been going for years, and they will be attending again.  There will be, of course, a NYCC exclusive episode discussing family’s who attend conventions, as well family’s who cosplay together.  The plan, maybe speak to family’s on Sunday, which used to be called Family Day.

Not that this is completely off what we would normally talk about but we are discussing Character Alignment.  This episode focuses solely on the good character alignment.   Kat used to play D&D frequently with her Best Friend as the DM and several other friends, playing for hours (usually from 7 pm to somewhere around 6 am) .

After the comic con episode GFT will record the next two episodes, and of course finally discuss the importance of character alignment within D&D and..

Apps in therapy

September 3, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#10: I think I should preface this by saying in no way should any of these apps be used without therapy.  These are not ways to diagnose or treat alone, but in conjunction with mental health professionals.

https://www.codetherapyfilm.com/

Code therapy is a 15 minute documentary that discusses depression.  Discussing that depression is the second largest cause of disability in the world and then discussing apps that can be used to help those who are suffering from depression.

http://www.psychiatryadvisor.com/top-10-mental-health-apps/slideshow/2608/ . The top 10 mental health apps that are discussed during the podcast.  Kat talks about her use of Breath 2 Relax and its use of diaphragmatic breathing (breathing into the belly as opposed to the chest) . Many of the other apps that are on the list express that they should be used with the help of a mental health professional, and Talkspace; an app that  is supposed to make therapy more accessible, has even posted that they are not to be as a substitute for in person therapy.

On psych tech Josúe and Kelly discuss Woebot a CBT AI  that runs with facebook messenger.  I am not going to discuss it I’m just going to leave this link right here for you to listen to it when you can.   https://www.psychtechpodcast.com/?powerpress_pinw=338-podcast

What is Sarahah, PTSD in comics and real life.

August 12, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#9: We talk about the new social media app, Sarahah.  Kat makes fun of the name, because she can’t say it.  Lea talks about her use in it.  The premise isn’t a bad idea, especially when we are discussing the implications it has in the work force, but it should have been left as an individual application for companies to decide to use to help strengthen the weak links, or build moral by people being able to discuss the strengths of their co-worker anonymously.  But what  it is is a social media app where people tear apart and insult their “friends” anonymously.  We will discuss the difficulties and mental health implications this will have in another episode.

In America at least 70% of the population has experienced a traumatic event.  We discuss the statistics of PTSD, how it is diagnosed, and types of treatments that are used to help those diagnosed with PTSD

http://www.healmyptsd.com/education/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-statistics .

Do Wolverine, Tony Stark, and Bruce Wayne have PTSD?  Using generic information on Wolverine, and Bruce Wayne…. and Iron Man 3 we attempt to see if these characters meet the criteria

Meta Batman, Female Doctor, BHNB

July 31, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#8: SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

OMG Batman is a meta… Kat goes on a rant on how everyone says that Batman is the best super hero because he has no super powers (other than he’s super rich, doesn’t make him a hero), and now….. in the Suicide Squad, he is classified as a meta due to his exposure to Nth metal.  He is classified as such from all of our favourite super bitch Amanda Waller.

BBC has announced that the new doctor is (drum roll please) Jodi Whitaker and Butt Hurt Nerd Boys (BHNB)everywhere lost their collective shit.  The Doctor can’t have a vagina.  I’m sorry in your real world where time traveling space aliens exist there has never been a female doctor.  But guess what there has been female doctors for years.  But as we discussed in the last episode, even when it comes to space aliens, it is important for people to find themselves.  Not all women want to be swept off by a madman in a box, some want to be the MadWoman.  They don’t want to cosplay the companion,  or the gender bent version of the doctor (they still will) but they want to be the doctor.  Now with Giant Hoodie.

Now I will give the writing for the past Doctor was kind of heavy handed with the “hints” that the Doctor will be a woman soon.  Bill’s writing was great.  But the same way many newb Whovian’s stated that Peter Capaldi is not their doctor because he wasn’t cute and goofy like Matt or sexy like David;  that is the same as the BHNB (butt hurt nerd boys) now saying that Jodi is not their doctor, and they will boycott Doctor Who.   For those who don’t know the incarnations and regenerations.
