Apps in therapy

September 3, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#10: I think I should preface this by saying in no way should any of these apps be used without therapy.  These are not ways to diagnose or treat alone, but in conjunction with mental health professionals.

https://www.codetherapyfilm.com/

Code therapy is a 15 minute documentary that discusses depression.  Discussing that depression is the second largest cause of disability in the world and then discussing apps that can be used to help those who are suffering from depression.

http://www.psychiatryadvisor.com/top-10-mental-health-apps/slideshow/2608/ . The top 10 mental health apps that are discussed during the podcast.  Kat talks about her use of Breath 2 Relax and its use of diaphragmatic breathing (breathing into the belly as opposed to the chest) . Many of the other apps that are on the list express that they should be used with the help of a mental health professional, and Talkspace; an app that  is supposed to make therapy more accessible, has even posted that they are not to be as a substitute for in person therapy.

On psych tech Josúe and Kelly discuss Woebot a CBT AI  that runs with facebook messenger.  I am not going to discuss it I’m just going to leave this link right here for you to listen to it when you can.   https://www.psychtechpodcast.com/?powerpress_pinw=338-podcast

What is Sarahah, PTSD in comics and real life.

August 12, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#9: We talk about the new social media app, Sarahah.  Kat makes fun of the name, because she can’t say it.  Lea talks about her use in it.  The premise isn’t a bad idea, especially when we are discussing the implications it has in the work force, but it should have been left as an individual application for companies to decide to use to help strengthen the weak links, or build moral by people being able to discuss the strengths of their co-worker anonymously.  But what  it is is a social media app where people tear apart and insult their “friends” anonymously.  We will discuss the difficulties and mental health implications this will have in another episode.

In America at least 70% of the population has experienced a traumatic event.  We discuss the statistics of PTSD, how it is diagnosed, and types of treatments that are used to help those diagnosed with PTSD

Do Wolverine, Tony Stark, and Bruce Wayne have PTSD?  Using generic information on Wolverine, and Bruce Wayne…. and Iron Man 3 we attempt to see if these characters meet the criteria

Family of choice vs. Family of origin

June 24, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#6: Family of origin is the people who we are born into, or marry into.  While Family of Choice are the people that we choose to have involved in out lives.  These people will become like siblings, uncles, aunts or even surrogate parents for us.

In fiction family of choice is often used to help create a family with people that they have more in common with, especially when the main character has developed some type of supernatural powers.  The new family shares similar powers or secrets.

Is it really Video Game Addiction?

April 23, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#2: It seems many people believe they have a family member or loved one who is addicted to video games.  Are they really?  Are video games as bad as people think they are or is video game addiction just a new psychological buzz word.  This episode Lea and Kat discuss Video Game addiction; is it a diagnosis? What are the criteria? How did it first start? How can it be treated? And, how can it be prevented?

This episode is very heavy and loaded with some history, some facts, and diagnostic criteria.  This episode is also a little longer than we would normally want it to be, but again there is a lot of information that needed to be shared.

I hate to give more mention but I did quote Phillip Zimbardo’s Ted Talk: The Demise of Guys?  https://www.ted.com/talks/zimchallenge  Zimbardo believes that the boys are struggling educationally and financially due to their access to video games.  This goes to basic psych 101 concept of Freud’s Id, Ego, and Super Ego.  The id is where all desires and impulses are manifested.  Zimbardo believes that due to video games and internet porn’s  instant gratification boys are unwilling and unable to develop relationships with people they desire.  Zimbardo also makes some claims that sound as if that now that video games are prevalent that boys and men are searching form more male companionship, but not wanting to gain intimate relationships with someone they desire.

We discuss addiction and it’s diagnosis from the DSM 5  as well the fact that Video Game Addiction is in section 3: Condition’s for Further Study, in this section is documented as Internet Gaming Disorder, which describes what criteria will be looking for to diagnose someone with this disorder as well as the studies that still need to be done to place the disorder in the next edition.  The DSM states that they want to continue the studies with ages 12-20 year olds. With the 2016 video Game Statistics we find that the age of the average gamer is 35 years old.

You can see the study here: http://www.bigfishgames.com/blog/2016-video-game-statistics-and-trends/

Lastly, we discuss some of the horrible reasons why people believe that Video Game Addiction is a real diagnosis. Discussing Shawn Woolley who died by suicide and is believed to be due to playing Ever Quest, as well as many different  people whose deaths are said to be caused to their many hours of playing video games.

Please feel free to contact Lea @LFBee and Kat @KatMFT to comment
