Family of choice vs. Family of origin

June 24, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#6: Family of origin is the people who we are born into, or marry into.  While Family of Choice are the people that we choose to have involved in out lives.  These people will become like siblings, uncles, aunts or even surrogate parents for us.

In fiction family of choice is often used to help create a family with people that they have more in common with, especially when the main character has developed some type of supernatural powers.  The new family shares similar powers or secrets.

Level 60 Bikini Virgin Killer Sweater

May 23, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#4: Why when I play a female fighter or wizard or ranger or whatever when I play a video game the higher level my character is the less armor my character seems to be wearing.   My armor class is higher, that is cool, but it looks like I’m riding through Azeroth naked, or in a bikini.

But when you pick up the armor in any dungeon, it will look like a really cool breast plate, or chain mail pants and when you put it on it’s like a loincloth.   Is this what guys are looking for?

Anyway these costumes are not practical. Women in comic books, anime, video games really do allow for more movement but other than that they do not allow for more protection.   In comic books our super hero’s are dressed in belts and straps. Boys idolize these looks but do not women to actually dress like this.  They would prefer women to be dressed like the movie version of Gamora.     So fully clothed in real life and naked every other time.  Women are made to fit roles that are forced on them in society.   But when women follow the role and embraces it, she is ridiculed and demeaned.  http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1216223-virgin-killing-sweater . This sweater was created in a meme from a cosplayer, and now has gone insane.  Many cosplayers, have purchased it and done photoshoots in it.  Of course there have been trolls who anonymously behind their computer screen safely tucked behind their laptops, they insult these cosplayers or degrade them.  There are 155 million Americans who play games regularly and out of that, 48% of them are female.  When approximately half of the gamers being female,  it is still not ” safe” for female gamers.  It’s not just small insults of being called a noob or loser, when a man knows a woman is playing games it is rape jokes and insulting their looks, even though they don’t know how they look.    But, why would they think that a woman should be treated any different from their “naked” characters in a game.

This episode will discuss more of how the media continues to allow these

Trauma Porn & new home tech

May 7, 2017 by KatMFT Leave a Comment

#3: Starting off, we are apologizing for Lea & Kat sounding very congested, as tree sex attempts to kill them by hindering their breathing.

Kat gets to gush about her new computer and software she is using to record and edit with (thanks Shannon.) Because new tech is always fun to talk about, and gush about, and get and play with.

Why are people so fascinated by watching bad things happen?  As a society when there is a car accident we slow down to see what is going on, to see the chaos, the carnage, we pray that the people are okay while secretly hoping there is blood.  WHY????  Daddy O Five of YouTube fame is the car wreck.  People have stopped on his channel to watch him and his wife “prank” his children.   All of the pranks have bordered on emotional and verbal abuse, where they curse at their children and call them names, things that we tell our children not to do to other children and here are grown adults doing it to their own children.  This channel has over 700,000 followers and it took way too many videos for someone to finally say that this was not right.  They have been interviewed by several different media outlets and finally issued a very heavily scripted apology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoYTdYRPPpw&t=20s

This family has posted videos clearly showing that their youngest child has emotion issues, where he has self harmed, and instead of getting him help they belittle him and punish him.  the youngest also is suffering from encopresis or he is playing with his feces which is evidence of developmental regression. Again, with these signs the family did not seek out help but decided to ridicule him on video, in front of over 700K people.

Finally the biological mother has gotten custody of two of the children.

Listen to the rant and how the decisions can be made.

Welcome to Geeks & Family Therapy!

April 1, 2017 by KatMFT 8 Comments

So my first post regarding a podcast which will go live later this week.  My name is Kat, I will be co-hosting a podcast with my friend Leanika, called Geeks and Family Therapy.  I am a family therapist in Pennsylvania, working towards licensure, as well as becoming a certified Ecosystemic Family Therapist.

What is Eco Systemic Family Therapy?  ESFT is a treatment for children and families experiencing behavioral or relational challenges and is based on the theory that change in family structure contributes to change in the behavior of individual members. ESFT begins with the fundamental assumption that both the child and caregivers functioning are linked to their relational environments at home and in the community. Treating a child within this model means working simultaneously with the child and family, the home setting, and the family’s community network.  (from http://dbhids.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/EPIC-ESFT.pdf )

Leanika received her Masters degree in Media Psychology from Touro University in 2016;  which is a new branch of psychology which focuses on the relationship between human behavior and media; which includes social media.

Currently, she works as a case planner for a non-profit foster care program in NYC.   But hopes to focus her skills working in social media and consulting.  Lea particularly enjoys working with the cosplay, gaming and comic communities.

What will Geeks & Family Therapy be about?

Geek culture’s influence and impact on families; its presence and use in family therapy as well how psychology is used in geek culture and media.

Both Lea and Kat will discuss popular culture and its impact on families. How psychology is utilized to influence consumers, when purchasing toys, games, books, movie tickets, etc.  As well as how media, pop culture,  and geek culture can be utilized in psychology and therapy.
